Being a wedding photographer, sometimes it feels like I have the priviledge of making lifelong friends with just the click of a shutter. From the first moment a bride contacts me with her heart a flutter; ideas pouring from her fingertips onto ourContact Usform, to the interactions back and forth by email which always remind me of giddy schoolgirls passing notes in class about a boy they liked.
I get to go on coffee dates, have a fun filled evening of appetizers and drinks, chat about “the details” and reminise on how our men proposed. It warms my heart every time a bride first contacts me to the moment I deliver her images; we become kindred friends.
Denika contacted me the winter of 2013 after viewing my work with her uncle, a fellow photographer and friend. While I was busily planning my own wedding and knee deep in preparation to move to Yellowknife, Denika knew I was going to be living in her home town and it made her decision a simple “Yes!”
I was truly honoured to be asked to be a part of this magical moment in Denika’s life, and have her as my first Yellowknife bride.
Shawn and Denika have been together for 5 years; what an amazing journey they have made thus far: Denika told me that she had started planning her wedding a year previous to this date when they found out they were expecting their beautiful baby girl. On July the 26th 2013, she went into labour and on the 27th little baby Kaiyer was born into this world.
Denika went on to say “July 26th of this year [2013] I went into labour, so we felt a life event was fitting for next year as well.”
So, on the very day her life changed one year previous, Denika woke again with joy and anticipation. Today, she would marry the man whom her soul loves deeply.
This is Kaiyer, who just a day after their wedding would turn 1. With a wedding and a birthday planned all on the same weekend; Kaiyer, mommy, and daddy had one BIG weekend planned.
Shawn and Denika bought one another gifts, and as Denika opened a small box she made a giddy sound. Shawn had bought her a beautiful double strand pearl bracelet. Shawn was equally impressed by his wife’s gift to him, a stunning Bulova watch.
Denika wanted her bouquet to hold something old, a memento. The lace wound around her bouqeut was from her mothers original wedding dress. I absolutely adore when brides incorporate their past into their future!
As the bridal party waited for the geusts to arrive, Denika and her bridesmaid (and man of honour) sat in the sheer tent that stood at the top of the aisle. A little mummy and me time with Kaiyer was needed, and snuggles followed.
“Sourire”, Marie would say in soft spoken French to her beautiful little girl Camille, “Smile for Stephanie”.
I had met Marie-Eve on a photo walk a few weeks prior and instantly fell in love with her soft and inviting personality. The wife and mother to a precious little family.
I found so much joy in photographing them in this beautiful summer bloom that Yellowknife is in. Thank you for the opportunity to showcase your family.

When the formal photos were over Camille was beaming about the cupcake Mommy and Daddy had promised her. “Gateau?” she politely asked in French.

I adore little ones, and the best part of Infant and Children photography is when they are related to you!
Ian’s cousin Morgan is the proud mommy of two of the happiest children I know. When Ian and I were married we had Dylan as our ring bearer, but Rayanna was still safely tucked away in mommy’s tummy; that didn’t stop Morgan from performing the most impressive 7 month pregnant Russian dance I have ever seen.
When I told family I was coming down to visit and photograph a wedding Morgan was the first to schedule a visit. I couldn’t wait to hold my newest “niece”. When I turned the camera on her she instantly lit up. In all my years I have never had a baby so joyful for an entire photo session. Dylan her older brother was having none of it, and it took a trip out to the back yard in the warm sun to liven his moods. I love these kids so much and I’m blessed to have had a long visit with them on this trip down to BC.
Ok, seriously, first picture taken and she was already all smiles! ↓

Dylan may have not agreed to a formal photo session, but I did take a candid while he played alongside his sister with his dinosaur ↓

Morgan may have brought enough outfit changes to put a catwalk to shame, but her favourite dress was “The little black dress”, and I couldn’t agree more ↓

When the formal pictures were over we ventured to the backyard for Dylan to stretch his legs and find adventure; and that he did ↓

I have known the Mader’s, well, since before I can remember. My parents sang “I swear” by All for One at their wedding. And their son Geoff married my cousin Brittany, who was more like a sister than a cousin because we grew up across the park from each other and are only a month apart in age.
The Mader’s hold an important place in the history of my photography. When I came home from Ireland 7 years ago I embarked on becoming a full fledged photographer. My very first paid session was the Mader’s, I remember they were so patient with me and they hung their family portrait in the Front room of their home. It was humbling and it was encouraging to have someone believe in me so much.
Now when Wendy tried to set up the next family portrait schedules conflicted, time was never in our favour, Wendy was definitely trying her hardest to make it work, and a little over a week and a half ago, before they went on her Mexican Vacation I finally had the privilege to photograph them once more!
I absolutely adore Jon and Wendy, and think of them as my immediate family!
Selena has been a long time friend since high school and earlier this year we did a family session. When we got to talking about pictures she had mentioned re-doing her bridal photos.
Long story short, their wedding photographer showed up at our location shooting another client. Selena and I remained quiet… Her husband however, when asked by the photographer was completely truthful about the purpose of the session… I nearly died.
Aside from that, Selena and her little family knocked this session out of the park. I simply adore each shot!
On May 11th Maximus Antonio Garcia was born to Tony and Larissa, after having 3 beautiful little girls in a row it was such a welcome surprise. From Camouflage to ATV’s this little boy will have such a fun childhood.
Congrats again to the Garcia’s on a healthy beautiful baby boy!
A few weeks ago prior to baby Maximus being born I was blessed to photograph Tony and Larissa’s little brood of cuties. I’ve visited the hospital for both Lyla’s and Jessa’s first days in this world and they have all turned into the cutest little dumplings!
The weather looked dicey leading up to our photo session but turned out perfectly for it!
Congrats Tony and Larissa to little baby Maximus Antonio Garcia!
Its that time of year again, my Photosession giveaway. I have been supremely blessed by all my clients this last year and want to give back! If you’re a couple, a family, or simply someone who wants a personal portrait done share and like our social media sites.
Each time you share via Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ you are entered into the giveaway.
Renee is someone I have known since she was a little girl, this Christmas she contacted me about wanting to do something special for her boyfriend Oscar. Renee wanted him to have pictures done with his daughter. It’s a small world because I knew Oscar briefly through my old manager, so it was quite fun to shoot the two on the day of.
I am a daddy’s girl myself and this session meant a lot to me for that very reason. Oscar and his little girl have a contagious smile they both share in common. The connection they have is unwavering and it is quite visible that she adores her daddy through and through.
