The Emptiness Series

Photography is an exploration for me, this is found in a continual pursuit of stories and experiences we can all identify with, or narratives I discover within meaningful conversations shared with others. I have found memory to be such a fleeting thing, yet it lingers in the deepest parts of us. Our thoughts and feelings remind us of victories we’ve yet to achieve, and the failures that fight to define us. Photography to me is a frozen thought, one that can tie us together, where one can identify with the quiet whispers of our shared humanity. This collection of work identifies our collective fear of emptiness. I have found through my interactions with a diverse group of women, that emptiness is often unseen to those around them. My process includes meeting individuals in the most obscure of places, such as my community rec center pool or a new church I’ve tried attending. By meeting a wide variety of people with unique identities I’ve been given the responsibility to photograph the emptiness felt within the environments that they are experienced the strongest, as well as honoring their vulnerability to open up their spaces as well as their hearts.

“My friend posted she was pregnant today, I cried in the shower and fell asleep in tears.” and “The disease could take my mobility, going to hang my laundry is now a reminder of my athletic past!” are large scale prints where one’s environment, as well as their absence create a deeper sense of emptiness.

When people see my work, I’d like them to feel that moment of shared emotion. I believe that however removed we are from each other’s narratives we are all a part of a universal shared experience where we can identify and work through our shared pain.
